Minutes for January 10, 2012 -- St. Paul’s United Church Council

Present:  Sheila Anthony, Mary Barr, Dan Bell, Erma Bracken, Liz Bruce, Brenda Crawford, Rev. Patsy Henry, Elaine Lazier, Nancy Moore-Carr, Marni Pedersen, Jeannette Pixley, Dawn Sieben.

Call to order: 7:00 p.m. by Sheila Anthony.

Adoption of Agenda as amended:  Moved by Brenda Crawford, seconded by Jeannette Pixley.  CARRIED

Minutes of September 13, 2011 meeting:   Nancy Moore-Carr moved, Marni Pedersen seconded the adoption of the minutes as printed.  CARRIED

Business Arising / Discussion from the minutes:

a)    Elaine Lazier presented a list of names of non-active adherents and       members.  People on the amended list will be approached to determine whether they wish to remain on the roll of St. Paul’s United.

b)   Sheila Anthony has completed the “Messages for the Minister” box and it will be placed at the back of the sanctuary.

c)    Sheila Anthony, Brenda Crawford, Marni Pedersen and Jeannette Pixley  will form the committee to organize the Upper Room renovations.  At the February meeting, they will outline how they plan to proceed.

d)   Sheila Anthony reminded everyone that annual reports are due in the office by January 15th.

e)    Marni Pedersen reported that the Christmas Food Hamper campaign was completed with only minor glitches.  Sheila Anthony thanked Marni and her crew for all of their hard work organizing the packing and delivering of the hampers.

Correspondence:  A request for financial support was received from the Massey Centre for Women in Toronto.  No action taken.

Reports:

a)    Minister’s Report:  Rev. Patsy Henry submitted a report:  Appendix A.  Brenda Crawford moved, Dan Bell seconded, that Rev. Patsy Henry’s covenanting service be held at 2:00 p.m. on April 29th, at St. Paul’s United Church.  Carried. 

b)      Worship & Pastoral Care, Education & Outreach:     Sunday school classes resume January 15th.  The next P.A. Adventure Day is planned for February 3rd.

c)    Finance:  General Fund in the black as of the end of December:  $6,890.97.  Bank balance end of December:  $26,936.50.   Liz Bruce moved the adoption of the financial report as presented.  Mary Barr seconded.  CARRIED.   Due to recent illness, Nancy Moore-Carr will contact Carolyn Brown to see if she would like to audit St. Paul’s financial records, or if she would prefer Sheila Anthony to perform this duty in her stead.     

d)   Property & Maintenance:  a)  Projects to be pursued:  Dawn Sieben and Nancy Moore-Carr continue to search for a professional to fix the bell; have the septic tank pumped in the spring;  Nancy Moore care will meet with Sarah Leroy from Public Health regarding water testing; Kone should be in to repair the lift January 12th; Sheila Anthony will ask Eileen van der Zwan to suggest any persons from the Breast Cancer Survivor Group who are uncomfortable descending the stair to the hall, be encouraged to use the handicap entrance.    

e)    Social Planning & Fundraising:   Elaine Lazier reported a gift card profit of $54.25 for January.   Gift cards are not available for Wal-Mart or Michaels.   A funeral luncheon for Wilma Redmond will take place Thursday, January 12th at noon.  Reverend Patsy Henry will confirm that the Tai Chi group has been notified of this event.  Jeannette Pixley & Brenda Crawford are organizing a turkey dinner to be held February 25th, 4:30-6:00 p.m.

f)      Presbytery:  No meeting in December

g)    Manse:  No current problems

New Business:  

a)    Gayle Robertson offered to donate a programmable thermostat to the church.  Sheila Anthony will thank Gayle for the offer, but it was decided that its use might be problematic.    

b)   Marni Pedersen moved that we mail a flyer throughout the Sydenham and Harrowsmith areas, inviting people to join us at St. Paul’s United Church.  Seconded by Dan Bell.  Carried.  Dawn Sieben will bring a copy of the proposed flyer to our congregational meeting on February 5th.

c)    Sheila Anthony will ask Leonard’s Fuel to inspect our thermostats.

d)   The nominating committee will be looking for 4 replacement council members.  “Members at Large” positions may be created.  Thanks were extended to Mary Barr, Liz Bruce, Robert Galbraith and Elaine Lazier for their service.  Elaine Lazier will let Nancy Moore-Carr know if she decides to stay on council for a second term. 

e)    We will remind members of the congregation to collect stamps, Canadian Tire money, and soup labels.
